(Stoneham, MA) to assist in the commercialization of SafetyScope™ - the company's performance system designed to evaluate human safety and productivity in the workplace by detecting individual impairment. Circadian (www.circadian.com) is the leading international research and consulting firm that assists managers with reducing the costs, risks and liabilities of extended hour (shift work) operations. Circadian's mission is to empower its clients to effectively use extended hours operations to compete in the global 24/7 economy. Eye Dynamic's SafetyScope™ serves as a fitness-for-duty screening tool, using a brief, non-invasive and inexpensive test to assess pupil change and eye movement parameters. The protocol is based on that used by law enforcement for the past 30+ years in the roadside Standardized Field Sobriety Test. SafetyScope's test results are compared to an individual's baseline, and are instantly computed and reported as a Pass or Fail result. Circadian will conduct management surveys and interviews with safety and risk managers as well as medical and HR directors to develop current market information. Detailed case studies from the respondents will assist Eye Dynamics in identifying 'early adopters' of the technology from their database of approximately 6000 companies across various industries and regions. Fitness-for-duty testing in the workplace is usually associated with alcohol and drug testing, and such testing is federally mandated for certain safety-critical jobs. Fatigue-related impairment is not only common, but its ramifications can be more severe than some other forms of impairment. For example, truck accidents due to the driver falling asleep are usually much more costly than other accidents since the driver is usually not taking any evasive action. Studies comparing alcohol and fatigue-induced performance impairment have shown that sleep-deprived subjects can reach the performance levels of "legally drunk" subjects after less than 24 hours of continuous wakefulness - a situation that is not uncommon in shift work. With one in five Americans - approximately 24 million people - having jobs that require night or rotating shifts (Bureau of Labor Statistics 2001), the potential market for fatigue-inclusive fitness-for-duty testing is tremendous.
